In our quest for beautiful hair, we often do things that damage our hair. A wig is a necessity for every woman- especially for those bad hair days. They revamp your look and boost your confidence. But how do you protect your hair while wearing wigs?

Some women are however forced to wear wigs because of a receding hairline or hair loss due to some reasons. What most women are not aware of, however,  is that the constant wearing of these wigs to cover up their hair loss can actually have a deteriorating effect thereby worsening their condition and creating more hair loss.

Glue extensions are also often used with some types of wigs. Unfortunately, they can cause damage that is often permanent. The glue can block your scalp pores and damage your hair follicles as well as burn and dry out your hair. The weight of the extensions can pull on your scalp which again can result in thinning hair.  Sometimes these extensions can also cause headaches and bald spots.

As bad as some of the effects of wigging are, wigs are still a necessity! I bet your interest level rose after reading this. I’m not surprised. That’s what I’m here for.

I’ll take you through ways you can eat your cake and have it. Yes! you can wig and still protect your hair. Here’s how.

Always scalp massage: When you wear a wig, the blood flow on the scalp is less since the wig is tightly attached to the head. Do this with a scalp massager before and after wearing a wig.

Get hair care products: there is usually lack of moisture under your hair when you wear a wig since most wigs are made out of fiber. It is therefore important to use a very good moisturizer and seal in moisture. Personally, I use Afrovirtues guava hair tonic, leave in conditioner, hair growth oil, hair growth butter and edge repair cream to properly treat my hair before using wigs. With these, I know I’m covered however long i wear the wig for.

Lastly, never sleep with your wig! One, your scalp needs to breathe. Secondly, the wig may be too tight and can damage your hair. Once you remove the wig, it would also be a good practice to apply a water-based moisturizer ensuring you focus on the ends of your hair.
